Gerakas

The Village

The region of Gerakas lies in the southernmost part of the island and is best known for its beautiful sandy beach making it one of the topmost bathing paradises of Zakynthos. These beaches are breeding grounds for the water turtle, Caretta carretta, and, therefore, are included in the nature protection program of Zakynthos. National Sea Park members patrol the area for the protection of the turtles and to transport general information of the turtles to the vacationing public.

Despite the signs of tourist developments of Gerakas, it remains being a quiet place. A few super markets here, a nice bar there and a number of the traditional taverns in between. Gerakas is the ideal place for a quiet and relaxing vacation.

In a lovely countryside amidst woods and olive groves one sees the scattered houses of Vasilikos bordering on Gerakas. Vasilikos has the most beautiful swimming bays of the island. The overall region extends from Argasi down to Cape Gerakas on the Skorpos peninsula. No actual village center exists, just a number of separated small residential settlements. The main road crosses a number of streets each one leading to small beaches and bays such as, to name just a few, Porto Azzuro or Porto Roma.
