The Village
Kaminia is an area in the midst of age-old olive trees and is part of the sloping village Lithakia. It is about 10 kilometers away from the airport. The Kaminia beach is a pebble beach section in the half-round bay richly covered in reeds where you will find that you can be almost by yourselves – even in the high season.
Lithakia is one of the older market places of Zakynthos. However, earthquakes and time have eradicated practically all of the traditional architecture of the area. As you walk up the main street with its characteristic old wooden buildings you come up to the village center with its platia and kafenion and a number of shops. Further up on main street, on the right side between the last couple of houses, stands the bell tower of the former church, Agia Marina built in 1586, which alone survived the earthquake in 1953.
Special attractions
The village church of Lithakia, Phaneromeni, was built in the 14th century and is noted, like many churches of Zakynthos, for the beautifully carved wooden banister around the altar. It also has a number of considerable icons some of which stem from churches of the vicinity destroyed in the earthquake.
